So i have had this on and off overheating problem with my 1990 fox. I have replaced the waterpump, hoses, thermostat, and thermoswitch. Along with the overheating problem the a/c is very bad. Both of these problems occoured at the same time. So im thinking they are connected. Is the fan supposed to run when you turn the air conditioner on? because it doesnt. Does anyone have any ideas? Oh by the way: I am running on water instead of antifreeze, this is in case i have to drain the system soon.
Any help please!!!

First off id try draining the fluids. I ran water for a while too, cuz i was too lazy and cheap to buy coolant-lol. The car ran much cooler with the green goblin in it tho-lol. Btw is the fan kicking on? And is your coolant level correct?

Fan should run with A/C on. Does your fan run at all? A/C cars have 2-speed fans, so if your fan is running without A/C and then you turn the A/C on, it should kick up another step for more cooling air.

THe fan comes on low speed only sometimes when i turn on the A/C. I am thinking it is an electrical problem, i have check all fuses and they are fine. I have tested the termostat and the wiring and it seems fine. If i short the fan where the thermoswitch is supposed to, the fan does come on high and low. The fan does not turn on even when the temp guage says 3/4. This remindes me, what is the function of the screw in thing with two small tubes coming off of it? The one by the thermotime switch. Because the yellow tube is snappe off. COuld this be a problem? (sorry no picture) |

I have checked the fuses, but not the relays. Could that be the problem? Is there any way to test a relay? because they are pretty expensive...

Yay!! I figured it out! Well sort of. IF i slide the temp control knob (the one on the climate control) to the left all the way, then back it off a little bit so it is in the middle of the blue section; the fan will come on!!! And my fox doesnt overheat, and the A/C works!! Also the different buttons (bi-level, heat, and dash) dont change anything. Does this mean that the relay is broken? Or does that mean that the climate control is bad? I dont know much about cars, i dont even know what a relay is! Any help would be nice! Thanks!

Temp sensor? Like the thing on the top of the engine? Or the one at the bottom of the radiator?

Hmm, the only problem I have had with the fan not going on was cured by replacing the sensor in the bottom of the radiator. But I would trust touge as he knows more about curing a fox of its ailments. Pretty much all I seem to do lately is break things on my fox.
